In the Mendawak landscape of West Kalimantan, Sangga Bumi Lestari is proud to collaborate with the West Kalimantan Environment and Forestry Agency and the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency to secure a 99,875-hectare forest corridor.
The corridor crosses four pulp and paper concessions, two oil palm concessions, four protected Village Forests (Hutan Desa), and seven unprotected village forests.
Sangga Bumi Lestari bridges conservation and economic development
Many of Indonesia's most biodiverse landscapes are dominated by industrial concessions and competing land-uses. Sangga Bumi Lestari was formed to advance conservation in these often-overlooked areas.

The forest corridor will be governed by a multi-stakeholder Corridor Working Group. The group met in Pontianak last week to discuss the results of camera trap and orangutan nest surveys we are conducting throughout the corridor area. Understanding where orangutans are living and at what densities will allow us to develop targeted strategies that bridge conservation and economic development.
Strengthening an unprotected orangutan population

The corridor will strengthen one of the most important orangutan populations outside of protected areas. Our goal is to demonstrate how mammals with large home ranges, like orangutans, can live in multi-use landscapes.
