Sangga Bumi Lestari is an Indonesian non-profit sustainability research, strategy, and implementation organisation that protects and restores ecosystems, improves livelihoods, and strengthens governance. We implement projects to increase community and civil society involvement in the management of forest areas, encourage corporate companies to operate forestry and agricultural concessions according to key sustainability criteria, and facilitate government support for sustainable development goals.
Sangga Bumi Lestari was established in November 2021, but the team has operated in Indonesia since 2009, previously under the name AidEnvironment Asia.
Role
Sangga Bumi Lestari is looking for a Research Assistant. Key responsibilities of the role are:
Work with the Landscape Research Manager to ensure biodiversity, vegetation and social data collected from all surveys is accurate and has been collected according to all best-practice guidelines.
Manage the collection of the datasets from the field teams and conduct data reviews to communicate the degree of data quality to the Landscape Research Manager.
Accurately enter collected data into research database and conduct data cleaning for scientific analysis
Work collaboratively with the field teams to provide support in the field to ensure accurate and robust data collection.
Support desk research, academic literature reviews, and scientific report writing.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a Biology, Zoology, Forestry, or other degrees related to biodiversity conservation.
Experience in collecting biodiversity and social data related to biodiversity conservation, with proven ability to conduct research activities, including data collection, data review, data cleaning, and database management.
Proactive, an eye for detail and accuracy when researching, and ability to clearly communicate findings.
Proficiency in entering and handling data in MS Excel and other data cleaning tools (for example OpenRefine).
Understanding various methods in conducting biodiversity research for different taxa.
Willingness to conduct fieldwork in remote areas.
Willingness to learn and follow the methodology and data quality standards,
Speaks fluent Indonesian and at least functional English.

The successful candidate would ideally be based in Pontianak (the location of the Landscape Research Manager) and be willing to do fieldwork in remote areas (all fieldwork costs covered).
