Sangga Bumi is supporting multi-stakeholder landscape-wide conservation in the Mendawak landscape of West Kalimantan. Located just north of the renowned Gunung Palung National Park, Mendawak is one of Indonesia’s most important unprotected landscapes.

Sangga Bumi is working in two villages dominated by both peat ecosystems and corporate agriculture and forestry concessions. In Sumber Agung (in the district of Kubu Raya) and Bagan Asam (in Sanggau), we are working alongside communities to increase their productivity and enhance their capacity to manage their local environment.

Through our Sangga Farming programme, we are working with farmers in both villages to:

  • Improve pest and disease control using environmentally friendly methods such as yellow traps, refugia (habitat manipulation), pheromone traps, and locally sourced botanical pesticides (single, mixed, and fermented).

  • Produce solid organic fertiliser (bokashi).

  • Establish nurseries, providing training on seedling and sowing techniques.

  • Plant and propagate refugia flowers to support ecosystem balance.

In addition, Sangga Bumi is providing assistance to farmers to accelerate the issuance of Cultivation Registration Certificates (STDB) for independent oil palm farmers, in partnership with the Regency’s Plantation and Livestock Office (Dinas Perkebunan dan Peternakan Kabupaten). This initiative forms part of a broader effort to promote more sustainable palm oil management, and strengthens the capacity of farmers in areas dominated by industrial concession development.

Sangga Bumi Lestari is proud to continue supporting multi-stakeholder collaboration in building resilient communities and healthy ecosystems across the Mendawak landscape.

Sangga Bumi Lestari is an Indonesian non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing ecological connectivity, conserving biodiversity, and supportings community-led sustainable development in some of Indonesia’s at-risk forest landscapes.
